FNB Premiership heat turns on

It is increasingly becoming difficult to ignore the magnet pull of FNB premiership. With 18 goals scored from Matchweek 2 fixtures, it is now a testimony that the scoring rate by these clubs is always on the upward trajectory. From week 1, it is an increase of two goals.

All the while, the debate is ongoing after only two games. Is there a club this season that sparks any existential debate than the Francistown based outfit, TAFIC. They remain the only club thus far to have won all their two opening games.

They are making their purpose very clear more especially after the acquisition of their only stand out player in Jean Lwamba. The Democratic Republican of Congo (DRC) born striker has found the net four times after two games. His standout performance is the only reason why TAFIC are perched at the summit of the standings and also the primary reason he is the current top goal scorer. In each of the games played, he has scored brace. He joins Segolame Boy of Township Rollers and Pako Gaofose of Mochudi Center Chiefs as the only players to score in every game thus far.

Tactically every team in the league, to use that most modern of football phrases, is in a good place. There is collective buy-in to the bold, positive approach especially shown by Enos Mmesi of Center Chiefs  established in his debut campaign, providing as it did a much-needed contrast to the negative drudgery of the David Bright and Stan Tshosane years and almost proving enough to secure a top four finish. For that to happen this time, the most obvious thing the manager needs to sort out is how his players defend at set pieces given how bad they were in the last game. Chiefs did not come to honor the games; they came to compete against a club that has been tested a couple of times during qualifiers of CAF games.

What is interesting however is that the mood is never somber across the stadiums. Jwaneng Galaxy, the defending champions are making their quest silent and if unchecked, they still can poise danger. Defensively, they are astute, nobody has scored a goal past them. And as for Morupule Wanderers and Nico United, the scoring frontline is yet to function as none  of  them have scored thus far.

  • 3 players have scored in 2 consecutive games
  • Jwaneng Galaxy is yet to concede a goal
  • 18 goals scored this weekend
  • Morupule Wanderers and Nico yet to score a goal
